Why does the government keep the public in the dark about UFOs?

I'm curious to know what other people's theories are about why the government keeps information about UFOs and extraterrestrial life classified. Why are they afraid to let us know what they know???

I think it has something to do with religion. I saw a TV program a long time ago that said that the government hides information about UFOs from the public because they are afraid that people would lose faith in "god" and there would be civil unrest.

The government is not sure about what they know about UFOs. As from experience nothing untoward has happened so far for anyone to be concerned about UFOs
It is not how much one has but what one makes of what one has is the route to happiness :)
